This remains the best compliment I’ve ever gotten. Sorry other compliments, you got nothin’ on this.
(Also, this is representative of how me and Nic looked then, we are both much more stylish now OBVIOUSLY.)
We totally are more stylish now. Though, to be fair, I still have that sweater…In fact, I am wearing it now. :D
THIS MAKES ME SOOOO HAPPY.
here’s something quick and messy for vakarrus that might help illustrate stylization.
‘style’ is something i think a lot of artists get caught up on when they’re trying to get better at drawing. hell, i know i did it, too. i wanted to draw ‘anime style’ before i even knew the basics.
the solution is to draw from life. god, it’s such a cliche, but it’s 100% true. it wasn’t until i sat down and did some serious figure drawing in school that i really learned to look at the human body and its construction.
you see, when you try and draw in a ‘style’, all you’re learning is a series of symbols. stylization isn’t what something actually represents, instead it’s a collection of symbols that illustrate that thing. if that makes any sense. so what you gotta do is draw from life, from real pictures of humans. that’s going to help you understand the construction of the body, how parts fit together, how light hits muscles, what things look like in perspective.
and i know sometimes drawing from life is boring. but i’d like to think that i know anatomy pretty well, and as a result, i can not only draw humans with no reference, but it helps me to stylize my reference as well.
it’s messy and pretty inaccurate, but on the left is my drawing of the figure as it’s actually represented. on the right is the same figure but drawn in my ‘style’.
so what i’m saying is, you can draw the cartoons and comics you want to draw. you don’t have to draw photorealism all the time. but you first have to know how something works before you can stylize it. otherwise what you’re learning is meaningless symbols. ever wonder why pedestrian ‘anime’ artists’ drawings all look the same? it’s because that’s how they learned to draw. with symbols and suggestions of noses and eyes, not the real deal.
drawing is difficult and frustrating. if you’re not frustrated, you’re not learning anything. remember to have fun, though! otherwise, what’s the point?
This really helped me at a time when I was having issues finding my style again <3
